Trump launches scathing attack on Keir Starmer over Chagos betrayal | Politics | News

Justice Secretary Alex Davies-Jones said Britain’s Chagos Islands deal was important for national security but he was not told why.

Speaking to Times Radio, Ms Davies-Jones said she had not been given much information about activities at the Diego Garcia base but praised the importance of the agreement for the security of Britain and its allies.

Ms Davies-Jones said the bill would be brought back to Parliament “as soon as parliamentary time permits”.

Ms Davies-Jones said: “I completely understand how people would be curious about the exact details of this. There’s a lot going on at this base that even I don’t know about, that most of our Government ministers don’t know about, and that’s vital to national security as well. It protects us from terrorism, it’s very important to national security, it’s vital infrastructure, not just here in the UK, but also important for our allies and our Americans who use this base.”

He added: “As I mentioned, there are a lot of things going on at that base that I don’t even know about. Those who run the base, our military, our national security agencies who run that base, how important the infrastructure is, and our partners around the world are entrusted to me.”
