Trump names Louisiana governor as Greenland envoy

US President Donald Trump announced that he appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as special envoy to Greenland.
“Jeff understands how important Greenland is to our National Security and will strongly advance our Nation’s Interests for the Safety, Security and Survival of our Allies and indeed the World,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
The White House and the Greenlandic Prime Minister’s Office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Landry, who took office as governor of Louisiana in January 2024, thanked Trump about X and said: “It is an honor to serve in this volunteer position to make Greenland part of the United States. This does not affect my position as Governor of Louisiana in any way!”
Trump has said several times over the years that Greenland, a largely self-governing territory of Denmark, should become part of the United States, citing security reasons and his interest in the island’s mineral resources.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen said in a brief statement that “the appointment confirms America’s continued interest in Greenland.”
“However, we insist that everyone, including the United States, must respect the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
Earlier this month, the Danish Defense Intelligence Service said in its annual report that the United States was using its economic power to “assert its will” and threatened military force against friend and foe alike.
