Trump not going to Supreme Court tariff case arguments

President Donald Trump, who recently said he would be at the Supreme Court on Wednesday for oral arguments in the case that will determine the fate of many of his far-reaching tariffs, now says he will not attend.

“I will not be going to court on Wednesday because I do not want to distract from the importance of this decision,” Trump wrote in a Sunday post. Real Social post.

“In my view, this will be one of the most important and consequential decisions ever handed down by the United States Supreme Court,” he wrote.

If he loses the case, Trump said on October 15, “We will be left weakened, distressed, and in a financial mess for years to come.

“That’s why I’m thinking of going to the Supreme Court and watching it,” Trump said at the time.

If he had gone, Trump would likely have been the first U.S. president to attend oral arguments at the Supreme Court.

The Justice Department is asking the Supreme Court to reverse lower federal court decisions in two separate cases that found Trump lacked the authority to impose so-called reciprocal tariffs on goods imported from nearly every country in the world on April 2.

Tariffs range from a base level of 10% in many countries to 50% on goods imported from Brazil and India.

Also at issue in the case is the legality of separate “fentanyl tariffs” that Trump has imposed on certain imports from China, Canada and Mexico. Trump said that the customs duties imposed on these countries were to not stop the flow of this deadly drug to the United States.

Trump had called International Emergency Economic Powers Act apply tariffs.

On Sunday, Trump wrote: “If a President is not allowed to use Tariffs, we will be at a huge disadvantage to every other Country in the world, especially the ‘Majors.'”

“We would be truly vulnerable,” he said.
