Top Trump administration immigration enforcement officials are urging California Gov. Gavin Newsom not to release more than 33,000 criminal illegal immigrants, some convicted of violent felonies, back onto the streets without notifying federal authorities.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Acting Director Todd Lyons ask Newsom in a letter to honor ICE detainees for the 33,179 inmates held in California custody.

“Governor Newsom and California sanctuary politicians are sending murderers, pedophiles, and drug traffickers back from their prisons into our neighborhoods and putting American lives at risk,” Lyons said. “We call on Governor Newsom and his administration to commit to stopping this dangerous imbalance and honoring ICE detention detainees for the more than 33,000 criminal illegal aliens in California custody.”
“This is common sense. Criminal illegal aliens should not be released from prisons onto our streets to terrorize more innocent Americans,” he added.
In all, inmates were responsible for 399 murders, 3,313 assaults, 3,171 burglaries, 1,011 robberies, 8,380 dangerous drug offenses, 1,984 weapons offenses and 1,293 sexual assault offenses, DHS said.

Since Newsom took office in 2019, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) has coordinated the transfer of more than 12,000 people to ICE custody, including murderers, rapists and other violent criminals.
State law currently allows CDCR to notify and coordinate with ICE to detain individuals who have been convicted of felonies and have served their sentences in California state prisons.

Newsom has heavily criticized ICE for the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. California’s sanctuary law – SB 54 – limits cooperation between state and local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities on illegal immigrants unless they commit certain serious crimes.
