Trump orders federal agencies to stop using Anthropic AI tech ‘immediately’

President Donald Trump said Friday that he has ordered all U.S. government agencies to “immediately stop” using technology from artificial intelligence company Anthropic.

Trump’s sudden and unexpected order comes as the artificial intelligence startup faces pressure from the Defense Department to comply with demands that the company be able to use its technology without the restrictions Anthropic wants. The company wants the Pentagon to provide assurances that its AI models will not be used for fully autonomous weapons or mass domestic surveillance of Americans.

The Pentagon had set a deadline of 5:01 pm ET on Friday for Anthropic to agree to its requests allowing the Pentagon to use the technology for all lawful purposes. If Anthropic did not meet this deadline, Pete Hegseth threatened to label the company a “supply chain risk” or force the company to comply by invoking the Defense Production Act.

“The left wing lunatics at Anthropic made a HUGE MISTAKE trying to EMPOWER the War Department and force them to abide by the Terms of Service instead of our Constitution,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. he said.

“Their selfishness puts AMERICAN LIVES at risk, endangers our Troops, and ENJOYS our National Security.”

“Therefore, I am directing ALL Federal Agencies in the United States Government to IMMEDIATELY STOP all use of Anthropic technology,” Trump said.

“We don’t need it, we don’t want it, and we won’t do business with them again!”

Trump said there would be a Six-Month phase-out period for organizations like the War Department that use Anthropic’s products to varying degrees.
