In the early hours of Saturday morning, scenes that could have come out of a blockbuster movie played out on the streets of Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. The electricity went out, there were explosions in the city, and the US army entered. The country’s president, Nicolás Maduro, was removed from his home and power.
For months, Trump has been waging a maximum pressure campaign against Maduro. He accused him of being responsible for drug trafficking and illegal immigration to the United States. A large naval armada moved to the Caribbean and fishing boats were attacked.
But it shocked the world when a sitting president was captured, removed from office, flown to the United States and then indicted on drug trafficking charges.
