President Donald Trump said Thursday that he plans to meet with Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado in Washington next week.

Appearing on Fox News’ “Hannity” program, Trump was asked whether he considered meeting with Machado after the United States attacked Venezuela and captured its president Nicolás Maduro.

“Well, I understand he’s coming next week and I can’t wait to say hello to him,” Trump said.

This will be Trump’s first meeting with Machado, who the US president said has “no support or respect at home”.

According to reports, Trump’s refusal to support Machado was linked to Trump accepting the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, which he believes he deserves.

But Trump later told NBC News that he believed Machado should not have won the award, but accepting the award “had nothing to do with my decision” about the possibility of governing Venezuela.
