Child, woman killed in horror truck crash at Canoona, Queensland

A young child and a woman are dead and a man is fighting for his life after a horror truck crash closed a highway in central Queensland.

A Mercedes-Benz truck and a Freightliner truck collided just after 10.40pm on Wednesday at the corner of Raspberry Creek and Kunwarara Rds in Canoona, about 58km north of Rockhampton.

A woman in her 20s and a toddler traveling on the Freightliner suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash. They both died at the scene.

The driver, aged in his 20s, also suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted to Rockhampton Hospital.

The driver and sole occupant of the Mercedes-Benz truck, a man in his 30s, was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Police say the Bruce Highway in Canona is expected to remain closed for some time.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
