Trump Reduces China Tariffs To 47% After Talks With Xi Jinping At APEC Summit | World News

In an important development for global trade, US President Donald Trump announced that customs duties on Chinese goods will be reduced from 57% to 47%, following high-level talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea on Thursday.

Trump also announced that tariffs on fentanyl imports from China will be immediately reduced, reducing the rate from 20% to 10%. This decision follows China’s commitment to crack down on fentanyl exports and marks a significant breakthrough in negotiations between the United States and China.

The two leaders met in Busan on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, where they held talks aimed at easing long-running economic tensions between Washington and Beijing. Describing the discussions as a “great success,” Trump added that he plans to visit China in April 2026 to build on the progress made at the summit.

The meeting took place at a time of rising tensions between the world’s two largest economies following months of trade disputes. Earlier this month, China tightened export rules and warned of possible restrictions on U.S. software exports, raising tensions.

Trump also declared the trade dispute between the United States and China resolved, signaling a potential thaw in relations after years of friction over tariffs, technology access and supply chain security.

When asked about the Taiwan issue, the US President stated that the issue “was never brought up” at the meeting and emphasized that the discussions continued with a focus on trade and cooperation.

Trump told reporters that the rare earth issue has been completely resolved, calling it “a deal for the world” and noted that the terms will be reviewed and renegotiated every year.

Trump also announced that he and President Xi Jinping agreed to cooperate in efforts to resolve the war in Ukraine. He also added that Xi expressed his willingness to assist the United States in continuing peace efforts related to the conflict.
