Trump Renews Greenland Bid, Imposes 10% Tariffs On European Nations; EU Calls Emergency Meet – What’s Next | World News

In a renewed push to buy Greenland, US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced tariffs on several European countries, including Denmark, France and the United Kingdom, unless they support a US plan to take over the Arctic island. Trump claimed that this move was necessary for national security, citing China and Russia’s interest in the region.
Then, just hours after Trump’s announcement, EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen said the tariffs undermine “transatlantic relations” and “risk a dangerous downward spiral.”

In a post on Truth Social, Trump warned of increasing tariffs: 10 percent starting February 1, 2026, and 25 percent starting June 1, 2026.
“Beginning February 1, 2026, a 10% Tariff will apply to all goods shipped to the United States from all above-mentioned Countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Finland). On June 1, 2026, the Tariff will be increased to 25%. This Tariff will be due and payable until an Agreement is reached for the Full and Complete purchase of Greenland,” Trump said.
“We have subsidized Denmark, all the European Union countries, and others, for many years without charging them duties or any other fee. Now, centuries later, it is time for Denmark to give back — World Peace is at stake! China and Russia want Greenland, and there is nothing Denmark can do about it. They currently have two dog sleds as guards, one of which was recently added. Only the United States, PRESIDENT DONALD J. Trump, can play this game so successfully! Especially “No one will touch this sacred piece of land because the national security of the United States and the world in general is at stake.” he added.
“Above all, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Finland went to Greenland for unknown purposes. This is a very dangerous situation for the Safety, Security and Survival of our Planet. By playing this very dangerous game, these countries have posed a level of risk that is not defensible or sustainable. Therefore, in order to maintain Global Peace and Security, it is imperative that strong measures be taken to ensure a quick and smooth end to this potentially dangerous situation,” Trump shared.
He also commented on the fact that many European countries are sending military personnel to Greenland as part of the NATO exercise called “Arctic Resilience”.
“The United States has been trying to do this operation for over 150 years. Many Presidents have tried and for good reason, but Denmark has always refused. Now, because of the Golden Dome and Modern Day Weapon Systems for both Offensive and Defensive purposes, the need to ACHIEVE is particularly important. Hundreds of Billions of Dollars are currently being spent on Security Programs related to the “Dome”, including the possible protection of Canada, and this very shiny but extremely complex System can only operate to maximum potential and efficiency due to the angles, distances and boundaries if this Land “If that includes them, they are open to immediate negotiation with the United States, Denmark, and/or any of these countries that put so much at risk, despite everything we’ve done for them for decades, including maximum protection.” Trump also wrote.

Greenland is a semi-autonomous region of Denmark and an Arctic island. He even threatened to impose tariffs on countries that oppose the move.

“The EU stands in full solidarity with the people of Denmark and Greenland. Dialogue is vital and we are determined to build on the process that started last week between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States,” he said in a post on X. he said.
“Tariffs could undermine transatlantic relations and lead to a dangerous decline. Europe will remain united, coordinated and committed to preserving its sovereignty.” he added.
He also explained that the recent deployment of troops to Greenland by EU countries was part of Denmark’s previously coordinated exercise and “does not pose a threat to anyone.”
According to ANI, France24, citing an official, also reported that the EU has called an emergency meeting on Sunday to discuss the proposed tariffs.
What’s Next for Greenland?
Apart from internal discussions within the EU, a meeting with the US could also be the next step towards resolving the situation. As Trump’s deadline approaches, it remains to be seen how the Danish government and Greenlandic administration will react to the tariff threat.
