Trump restricts migration after Washington shooting, targets Venezuela

The Trump administration is taking an even tougher stance on immigration following Wednesday’s deadly shooting near the White House that left one National Guard member dead and another injured.

Additionally, the White House has signaled that it may step up operations targeting alleged drug smugglers in the Caribbean, following months of attacks on ships accused of smuggling drugs to the United States.

Here’s what happened this week.

Shooting attack in Washington

The Trump administration is moving to impose more restrictions on immigrants trying to enter the United States after an Afghan national was identified as a suspect in Wednesday’s deadly shooting.

Law enforcement identified the suspect who was shot as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, 29, who legally entered the United States in 2021 as part of the Biden administration’s Operation Welcoming Allies program, which aims to facilitate the resettlement of Afghan refugees to the United States.

U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20, died Thursday from injuries sustained from Wednesday’s shooting. U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe remained in critical condition as of Friday, according to U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro.

As a result of the conflict, Trump said in a social media post on Thursday that he would permanently pause immigration from “all Third World Countries.”

Similarly, Joseph Edlow, head of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said Thursday that under Trump’s orders he is “directing a full-scale, rigorous re-examination of every Green Card for every alien from every applicable country.”

The White House did not provide additional information about which countries would be affected and referred Fox News Digital to Trump’s social media post.

Venezuela operations

Trump also signaled that his administration would begin conducting ground operations while increasing operations targeting alleged drug traffickers in the Caribbean.

Since September, the Trump administration has launched more than 20 strikes against alleged drug boats in Latin American waters and has strengthened its military presence in the Caribbean as part of Trump’s efforts to stem the flow of drugs to the United States.

“You’ve probably noticed that people don’t want to deliver by sea anymore, and we’re going to start stopping them by land,” Trump said Thursday. he said. “The terrain is easier, but that will start soon.”

The White House did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on whether the White House is considering a ground attack on Venezuela or the deployment of U.S. troops. But Trump has previously refused to rule out sending US ground troops to Venezuela.

The New York Times reported Friday that Trump met with Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro last week.
