Donald Trump risked starting a new war of words with the European Union after heaping praise on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The US President’s comments came ahead of parliamentary elections in Hungary on Sunday; This election is set to be the biggest challenge Orban has faced during his 16-year term in government.
The US President wrote on Truth Social: “If Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and the Hungarian People need it, my Administration stands ready to use the full Economic Power of the United States to strengthen the Hungarian Economy, as we have done for our Great Allies in the past. We are excited to invest in the future Prosperity that will be created by Orbán’s continued Leadership!”
JD Vance, who recently visited Hungary, openly supported Viktor Orban, who has been the country’s Prime Minister for the past 16 years. Vance said he was in Hungary “to help him with this campaign cycle.”
Vance also said that the EU was interfering in the elections and that the EU had expressed its concerns through European Commission spokespeople. EU foreign affairs spokeswoman Anitta Hipper said: “We also have diplomatic channels and will also use these to raise our concerns with our US counterparts.”
Commission vice president Arianna Podestà added: “We have the appropriate channels, the appropriate frameworks, the diplomatic contacts. [and] joint statement. This is a framework within which we discuss issues relevant to our partners. “And if the United States thinks it’s something worth pursuing with us, we will move the negotiations here.”
Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán, who has been in office for 16 years, is running against Péter Magyar in this Sunday’s elections. Both attended major rallies in Hungary today (April 10).
According to the latest opinion polls, Magyar is ahead and the Tisza party, which is close to both, could end Orban’s government. Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin.
After meeting with Orban, a strong Eurosceptic, Vance attacked the European Union and Ukraine. BBC reported. He accused the EU of “one of the worst examples of foreign election interference I’ve ever seen or even read about… because they hate this guy.”
He also added that “one of the reasons” for his visit was that “the interference from the Brussels bureaucracy is truly disgraceful”, the BBC added.
