President Donald Trump said he thought he would have the “honor” of “taking Cuba” in his speech during the executive order signing at the White House on Monday.

“Whether I release it or take it, I think I can do whatever I want with it,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office with Vice President J.D. Vance standing behind him. he said. “They are a very weakened nation right now.”

The president’s comments about taking Cuba came as he wages a war in Iran that has stretched into its third week. Trump encouraged the Iranian people to overthrow their government in this conflict; this is one of the reasons he gave for starting the war.

Trump recently said that he would turn his attention to Cuba after the United States achieved its goals in Iran. He has threatened a “friendly takeover” of the Caribbean nation, which has been an enemy of the United States for decades, except for a brief thaw when Barack Obama was president.

The Cuban threats are the latest example of Trump’s more aggressive foreign policy during his second term in the White House. In addition to the war in Iran, Trump ordered a military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and has made repeated attempts to seize Denmark’s Arctic island territory of Greenland. Denmark has repeatedly said that Greenland is not for sale.
