Trump Says ‘Question Of Time’ Before US Turns To Cuba After Iran

Washington: President Donald Trump suggested Thursday that he would pursue an unspecified project for the Caribbean island of Cuba, which already faces a U.S. energy blockade after the war against Iran.

“We want to fix this first, get it over with, but it will only be a matter of time before you and so many incredible people return to Cuba,” Trump said in his speech at the White House reception.

Addressing US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the Miami-born son of Cuban immigrants, Trump added: “You’ve done a great job in a place called Cuba.”

Washington imposed an energy blockade on the communist-ruled country, which suffered a decline in fuel stocks after the US captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, a major oil supplier to Cuba.

No oil has been imported to the island since January 9, forcing airlines to restrict flights to the island and deepening the long-running economic crisis.

Many in Cuba fear it could be the next country on Trump’s foreign intervention list, especially after the United States and Israel attacked Iran and killed the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Both Trump and Rubio have made no secret of their desire to effect regime change in Havana.
