Recall alert: Why automaker Toyota is recalling over 1,61,000 vehicles in the US — All you need to know

Toyota has reportedly recalled around 1,61,268 vehicles in the US due to problems with the rear view camera screen while reversing, Reuters reported on January 31, citing the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Notably, this follows a series of similar recalls last year and a warning issued last week by the automotive major for a range of issues with its vehicles in the US.

Recall for 162,000 vehicles on January 23

Toyota announced a safety recall covering approximately 1,62,000 vehicles in the US on January 23 due to a faulty multimedia screen, Reuters reported.

The report stated that Toyota said the issue was related to the multimedia display, which could get stuck in the camera view or display a black image under certain conditions on those vehicles, potentially not meeting a federal safety standard.

This includes select model year 2024-2025 Toyota Tundra and Tundra Hybrid vehicles. The company added that customers will be notified about this issue by the end of March.

More than 55,000 US vehicles recalled due to loose inverter connection

Before that, on December 23, Reuters reported that Toyota was recalling 55,405 vehicles in the United States because the bolt inside the inverter was not tightened properly, resulting in incomplete contact at the inverter terminal. This was reported by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which added that the solution is currently under development.

More than 126,000 US vehicles recalled due to risk of engine stalling

According to Reuters, Toyota announced on November 13 that it would recall 126,691 Tundra and Lexus vehicles in the United States due to production residues that could stop the engine.

NHTSA confirmed that a remedy is in development and will be implemented when available.

Biggest number: Toyota recalls 1.02 million US vehicles

Toyota said on Nov. 5 it would recall more than 1.02 million vehicles in the U.S. for a defect that could cause the rearview camera to malfunction, increasing the risk of crashes, Reuters reported. Cameras are mandatory to help prevent drivers from hitting people or objects when reversing.

The automaker said the recall covers 2022 through 2026 model year Toyota and Lexus model vehicles, including the Camry, Highlander, RAV4, Prius and Lexus RX, TX, LS, GX, NX and LX, as well as Subaru Solterra vehicles equipped with the Panoramic View Monitor system.

“A software bug could cause the camera image to freeze or go blank when the vehicle is reversing, meaning vehicles do not comply with federal rearview requirements,” NHTSA added.

Toyota recalls nearly 394,000 US vehicles

Toyota also recalled nearly 394,000 U.S. vehicles in October over a rearview camera issue that could reduce drivers’ visibility and increase the risk of crashes, Reuters reported.

This recall covers several models, including certain 2022-2025 Tundra, Tundra Hybrid and 2023-2025 Sequoia Hybrid vehicles.
