Trump calls for impeachment of Senate Democrat who called ending Obama’s Iran deal ‘bad mistake’
President Trump called for the impeachment of Democratic Senator Jack Reed (RI) on Sunday; The legislator criticized his decision to withdraw from the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) during his first term.
“Senator Jack Reed, a Dumocrat from R.I., lied when he said the Deal we just made wasn’t as good as the Obama disaster known as the JCPOA. Reed is either a straight-up crook or incompetent,” Trump wrote in Sunday’s op-ed. Sharing on Truth Social.
“The Obuma Deal was a path to a nuclear weapon for Iran, money and all, one of the worst and stupidest (hence Dumocrats!) deals ever made by the US. Our Deal is a WALL against Iran getting a nuclear weapon, the exact opposite of Obuma. Blame Jack Reed!” he added.
A sitting senator cannot be impeached, but can be expelled by a resolution requiring a two-thirds majority vote.
The president’s comments came just hours after Reed appeared on Fox News’ “Fox News Sunday” show; Here, Reed described the new deal as a “birthday present” for Trump that does not provide greater security against the Iranian regime and also does not secure long-term nonproliferation goals.
Reed said of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, which he will show host Shannon Bream: “First of all, we’re in a much worse situation than we were during the JCPOA. The burst time, the time it takes to assemble enough enriched uranium to develop a weapon, was 12 months during the JCPOA. Today, that’s one week.”
“We are negotiating against a country whose leadership has been eliminated. We now have more fanatical leadership that is investing much more and will strengthen their positions. … Abandoning the JCPOA was a bad mistake by the president. We can try to go back now, but it will be a difficult process to get back to that position,” he added.
Trump and Vice President Vance signed a memorandum of understanding with Iran on Sunday that will encourage a 60-day negotiation period to establish the terms of a longer deal.
Details of the agreement were not immediately disclosed but are planned to be released within 48 hours, in addition to the full text of the agreement, which is scheduled to be published on Friday.
However, lawmakers and former President Obama expressed concerns about the agreement, stating that it would likely reflect the terms set out in the JCPOA.
“The president doesn’t like to be questioned in any way, which is bad for an executive,” Reed told reporters Monday in response to Trump’s online post. local news source WPRI.
“Managers—the good ones—listen to criticism and then rationalize it away or agree with it. This was just a tirade from someone upset.”
He added, “And I think he was upset because there was a lot of truth in my statement. We don’t have a deal yet – we have an agreement to make a deal.”
