President Donald Trump sharply criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Saturday, saying he would join the war in Iran after the United States “already won.”
“The United Kingdom, once our Great Ally and perhaps our greatest, is finally seriously considering sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “It’s okay, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them anymore – But we’ll remember. We don’t need people joining the Wars after we’ve won!”
Trump’s statement came after the British Ministry of Defense said that one of the country’s two aircraft carriers had been put on advanced readiness in Portsmouth, England, for a possible mobilization to the Middle East, according to the BBC.
British destroyer HMS Dragon is also in Portsmouth, waiting to sail for Cyprus after delays.

Starmer said that the UK was not involved in the attacks, but “they operated in the region for defensive purposes”.
Addressing the British public on Sunday, Starmer condemned Iran’s “indiscriminate” attacks following the US strikes, adding: “The only way to stop the threat is to destroy the missiles at their source.”

He added that Britain had accepted the US request to use British bases for this “limited” purpose.
Following the attacks, Trump told Britain’s Telegraph that he was “very disappointed” in Starmer and claimed the prime minister had “taken too long” to allow the US to use British bases in the region.
British warplanes are also flying over Jordan, Cyprus and Qatar to strengthen defenses in the region, and a Merlin helicopter is on the way for additional aerial surveillance, according to the Ministry of Defence.

Starmer said this week: “As the region descends into chaos, my focus is on providing calm and collected leadership in the national interest.” “This means mobilizing our military and diplomatic might to protect our people. And it means having the strength to remain true to our values and principles, whatever pressure to do otherwise. Britain’s long-standing position is that the best way forward for the regime and the world is to reach a negotiated agreement with Iran under which it abandons its nuclear ambitions.”

For this reason, he said, the UK decided not to participate in the first coordinated attacks launched by the US and Israel on February 28.
In Parliament this week, Starmer added: “We all remember the mistakes of Iraq and have learned those lessons. Any UK action must always have a legal basis and an actionable, detailed plan.” said Starmer. “This government does not believe in regime change from heaven.”
Former British Prime Minister Liz Truss reposted Trump’s comments about X on the Saturday Truth Social, writing, “Righteous and damning.”
