Veteran Bengali actor Kalyan Chatterjee dies at 81

Veteran Bengali actor Kalyan Chatterjee, who acted in more than 400 films, passed away at a government hospital here, West Bengal Cinema Artists Forum said on Monday, December 8, 2025. He was 81 years old.

Chatterjee, who was suffering from typhoid and age-related ailments, died on Sunday night, December 7, 2025, while he was receiving treatment at MR Bangur Super Specialty Hospital.

The actor made his debut with the movie Aponjon, which was released in 1968. He mostly appeared in supporting roles in films.

Some of his notable films include Dhanyee Meye, Dui Prithibi, Sabuj Dwiper Raja and Baishe Srabon. He worked in Satyajit Ray’s Pratidwandi.

Apart from Bengali films, he has also worked in Hindi cinema, including Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani.

In its statement, the Artists Forum said, “One of our most valuable members, Kalyan Chattopadhyay, has passed away. We are in deep shock. May his soul rest in peace.” Chattopadhyay studied at Pune Film Institute.

His contemporaries include Soumitra Chatterjee, Sabitri Chattopadhyay and Dipankar De.
