Trump tells Starmer ‘we don’t need you’ over Iran war | World | News

Donald Trump accused Britain and Sir Keir Starmer of joining the war against Iran after the US had “already won”. The US President said on the Truth Social platform, “we don’t need them anymore” in response to two aircraft carriers potentially being sent to the region.

He wrote: “The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, perhaps the greatest of them all, is seriously considering eventually sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East. That’s okay Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them anymore – But we will remember. We don’t need people who fight in Wars after we win! President DONALD J. TRUMP.”

The government has not yet participated in or committed to offensive operations in Iran.

But an aircraft carrier has been placed on advanced readiness in case it needs to be deployed to the Middle East, and Britain has allowed the US to use its bases for defensive operations.

Defense sources told the BBC that the crew of HMS Prince of Wales, one of Britain’s two aircraft carriers, had been told they had to be ready to leave Portsmouth within five days.

The ship is currently undergoing routine maintenance ahead of a planned deployment to the North Atlantic and Arctic later this year.

A Ministry of Defense spokesman said: “We have been strengthening the UK’s military presence in the Middle East since January and have already deployed capabilities including Typhoons, F-35 jets, air defense systems and an extra 400 personnel to Cyprus to protect the British people and our allies in the region.

“Since the attacks began, British jets have been shooting down drones in the sky and we have deployed additional assets into the region to further strengthen our air defences, including more Typhoons and Wildcat helicopters with drone-destroying missiles.

“HMS Prince of Wales has always maintained a very high level of readiness and we are increasing the carrier’s readiness, reducing the time required to sail for any deployment.”
