Trump Threatens to Cut Trade with Spain Over Iran War Stance

Washington DC: US President Donald Trump on Wednesday reiterated his stance on cutting trade with Spain over the NATO ally’s refusal to allow the use of its military bases for operations linked to the war with Iran.
Speaking to journalists, Trump said that Washington could take economic measures against Madrid due to its location. “We can cut trade with Spain,” the US President said when asked about bilateral relations.
Since the conflict in West Asia, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has reiterated his opposition to the joint US-Israeli military strikes that killed Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on February 28.
Sanchez emphasized that his government stands firmly against the war. “This government is consistent in its principles and values: No war,” he said.
Trump also talked about the broader conflict with Iran and suggested that US military operations were causing serious damage. “Our military is the best. They are the strongest in the world and they hit them very hard. Forty-seven years of harassment and a lot of people are being killed, killed and maimed,” he said.
Commenting on maritime security concerns in the Strait of Hormuz, an important global energy transit route, Trump expressed confidence that the situation will stabilize. “I think you will see great security. We destroyed that country. Now they are paying a big price,” he said.
The US President also claimed that American forces were targeting Iran’s naval capabilities, particularly ships allegedly used in mine-laying operations. “We destroyed almost every minelayer in one night,” Trump said.
Previously, Trump said in a post on Truth Social that the US destroyed 10 inactive mine-laying ships along the Strait of Hormuz following reports suggesting Iran had planted mines in the waterway.
“I am pleased to report that we have hit and completely destroyed 10 inactive mine-laying boats and/or ships in the last few hours; more to follow!” the article said.
In a separate statement, Trump suggested the investment was a result of his administration’s policies, citing a newly announced oil refinery project in Texas.
This comes after Trump announced on Tuesday that he will open a new oil refinery within 50 years with investment support from Reliance Industries. The refinery would boost American markets, strengthen national security and increase energy production, he said in a post on Truth Social.
