President Donald Trump has unveiled his latest plans in connection with his comprehensive White House renovation plan.
President Trump announced that he will oversee the construction of a massive arch to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States.
It will reportedly be a replica of the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the White House plans to call the architectural feature the “Arc de Trump.”
The declaration was made Wednesday in the East Room to a packed audience of donors who finance the White House’s 90,000-square-foot ballroom.
The president wants a massive arch built at the entrance to the Arlington Memorial Bridge, across from the Lincoln Memorial, according to a presentation he made to donors using miniature models of the structures. Reflect the USA.
“This is the Arlington Memorial Bridge,” Trump said. “And at the end there is a circle built 150 years ago. There are two columns on one side, two columns on the other side, but there is only one circle in the middle.”
“And everybody said in the past that something had to be done there. But something called the Civil War got in the way. That’s a good reason.”
President Trump also revealed that a controversial statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee was proposed for the site more than a century ago.
“If they were going to put up a statue of Robert E. Lee in 1902, I wouldn’t mind,” he explained.
Trump’s spending bill, signed into law in July, is estimated to increase the national debt by nearly $3 trillion over the next decade and reduce tax revenue by $4.6 trillion.
It also eliminated more than $1.2 trillion in spending on Medicaid and SNAP programs, both of which primarily support low-income residents.
The bill appropriates $40 million for the National Garden of American Heroes, a sculpture garden that Trump has proposed.
The United States Treasury recently unveiled preliminary designs for a commemorative $1 coin featuring Trump’s face and the words “Struggle, struggle, struggle.”
The coin is being produced by the US Mint ahead of the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
The concept of celebrating the country’s history while also honoring Trump is not a new idea.
In June, Trump held a military parade through the streets of Washington, D.C., to commemorate both the Army’s 250th anniversary and his own 79th birthday.
The military estimated the cost of the parade to be between $25 million and $40 million.
The commemorative coins will accompany other symbolic displays of Trump’s power and influence on official federal grounds. Last month, huge banners bearing Trump’s face adorned federal buildings in the nation’s capital, prompting some Democratic lawmakers to draw comparisons to blatant displays of authoritarian propaganda under leaders such as Kim Jong Un, Benito Mussolini and Saddam Hussein.
The banners are just one of Trump’s attempts to reshape the nation’s capital in his image since he regained the presidency this year.
This includes the £200 million renovation of the White House ballroom, a crackdown by federal law enforcement against allegedly “out of control” crime in Washington and a military parade in June.
