House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (DY) briefly sparred with CBS’ Margaret Brennan on Sunday over her claims that President Donald Trump will rig the midterm elections.

During an interview on “Face the Nation,” Brennan pressed the New York representative about his past comments insisting there are “no election deniers” in the Democratic Party, even though he recently suggested the upcoming midterm elections could be “rigged elections.”

“Democrats were appalled when President Trump used language like that,” Brennan said. “How do you justify using this now? Doesn’t this undermine voters’ belief that you should participate?”

“No, I use that term in the context of Donald Trump’s unprecedented effort to take congressional maps across the country in a partisan fashion to rig the midterm elections and deny the American people the ability to actually decide who should be in the majority as far as the House of Representatives is concerned,” Jeffries said. he said.

“You know the Democrats are also going through gerrymandering and redistricting,” Brennan interrupted.

“No. No. No. Democrats are going to push back aggressively to make sure we have fair maps across the country, not the partisanship that Republicans have started in state after state,” Jeffries insisted.

The interview ended shortly after this conversation.

“You praised the New York state legislature for re-drafting new bills,” Bash said. “Is it hypocritical to criticize Texas, considering what you insist on in your own state?”

Bash also noted that Jeffries opposes redrawing New York’s congressional maps in 2022.

“What is important is that the redrawn map, which was actually adopted by the legislature, was adopted on a bipartisan basis in New York,” Jeffries said. “Democrats and Republicans in the House voted for the map because the redrawing was fair. That’s not what happened in Texas. In Texas, it’s a racist partisan gerrymander ordered by Donald Trump as part of an effort to rig the midterm elections. And we won’t let that happen.”
