AWS recovering after major outage affects apps and websites, including Snapchat and Ring

Amazon Web Services, a cloud computing service that powers many of the internet’s most popular applications and websites, is recovering from a major outage that disrupted online activity around the world for several hours on Monday.

According to DowndetectorUsers of apps like Snapchat and WhatsApp, a website that tracks online outages, and major websites including Amazon began reporting service outages shortly after 3 a.m. ET.

Amazon said it is “investigating increased error rates and delays for multiple AWS services in the US-EAST-1 Region” and is actively working to resolve them.

It is not yet known what caused the outage, but there is no indication that it was caused by a cyber attack.

Amazon Web Services, along with Google and Microsoft, provides much of the world’s cloud computing infrastructure.

Other apps and sites reporting outages on Monday included: Apple TV, Hulu, netflixDoorDash, Coinbase, Fortnite, New York Times, Reddit, Ring, Verizon, Venmo and Zoom.

While most of the apps and websites that experienced the outage worked normally, Amazon said there may be some permanent delays in an update.

“Some requests may be restricted as we work to reach a full resolution,” the company said.
