New Delhi: The Nobel Peace Prize never escaped from discussing. However, a candidacy in June once again extended the irony boundaries.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently nominated US President Donald Trump for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Netanyahu wrote in a letter sent to the Nobel Committee and later delivered to Trump, “He works to bring peace between regions and countries”.
The announcement arrived just a few days after Trump ordered a series of sensitive strikes to Iran’s nuclear facilities-a military operation that was greeted by Washington as “preventive action ve and condemned by Tehran as“ state-supported terror ”.
At the same time, Trump continues to support Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and maintain military support for Ukraine’s resistance to Russia – movements that attract international concerns.
The idea of a peace prize may seem contradictory to the man who bombs Iran’s nuclear areas, helps the Gaza campaign and promises to “crush enemies”. But Trump never hidden his ambition. During his presidency, he clearly mentioned the belief that his diplomacy deserves to be recognized with North Korea and Serbia-Kosovo. Now, a close ally revived this dream.
Netanyahu’s movement can also be strategic. Israel’s leader is facing an increasing examination on Gaza and diplomatic isolation. Trump, which remained a popular figure in some parts of Israel and in the Protestants, can help Netanyahu strengthen his legitimacy in the midst of the rising war fatigue at home.
Interestingly, Netanyahu’s movement was not the only one. Earlier this year, Pakistan thanked Trump for nomination and helping to prevent a greater war with India. This plan disappeared after triggering a storm of criticism of Trump’s strikes in Iran.
Meanwhile, history throws a long shadow.
Mahatma Gandhi, a global symbol of violence, was nominated five times for the Nobel Peace Prize. He never took it. The Nobel Committee later admitted that it was among the “greatest negligence ..
On the contrary, Trump can participate in a list of highly polarized winners, including Barack Obama (2009), Henry Kissinger (1973), Yasser Arafat (1994), Aung San Sau Kyi (1991), Abiy Ahmed (2019) and Wangari Maathai (2004). Each of them had a moment of victory, then there were years of discussions, war, scandal or brutal feedback.
Critics frequently asked if the Nobel Peace Prize was to be recognized in intention or the result. In the case of Trump, this question can define the whole debate. The defenders point to the agreements of İbrahim and the temporary fire fires he was mediating. It refers to the bombings, war threats and personal diplomacy.
Since the Nobel Committee weighed the nominations, the contrast with Gandhi remains touching.
A man led him to independence without a nation’s army. Another calls himself the “warrior president ve and boasts of rebuilding Pentagon’s missile stock. Someone never came to power. The other is holding nuclear codes.
And still only one, the second was officially nominated.
