Trump’s meeting with Putin in Hungary called off

But on Tuesday, the White House called the call “productive” and added: “Therefore, an additional face-to-face meeting between the secretary and the secretary of state is not necessary, and President Trump is not scheduled to meet with President Putin in the near future.”
Mr. Lavrov refused to budge on Moscow’s maximalist stance in talks with Mr. Rubio.
“I want to officially confirm that Russia has not changed its position compared to the agreement reached at the Alaska summit,” Lavrov told reporters in Moscow after the news of his meeting with his American counterpart.
Ukrainian and European sources were buoyed by Russia’s refusal to negotiate out of fear that Volodymyr Zelensky would be killed. He was pressured to cede his lands to Moscow as the price of peace.
The Coalition of the Willing, a group of allied European countries, issued a statement accusing Mr Putin of “delaying tactics” in his talks with Mr Trump.
“We all see that Putin continues to choose violence and destruction,” the statement said.
Since meeting the US president in Alaska, Putin has demanded Ukraine withdraw from the eastern Donbas regions of Donetsk and Luhansk as a precondition for peace.

But the surrender of Donetsk, which Moscow has failed to fully occupy since 2014, remains a red line for the Ukrainian president, who has said he will negotiate only on the basis of existing front lines.
Speaking to reporters, Mr. Trump appeared to stand behind Ukraine’s stance, insisting he wanted to see the conflicts “stay where they are, on the battle lines.”
On Tuesday, the Kremlin noted that no clear date had been set for the meeting.
“Listen, we have understanding with the presidents, but we cannot postpone something that has not yet been finalized,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
“Neither President Trump nor President Putin gave an exact date.”
