Journalist William Turton first informed Kirk’s comments in January 2024 for Wired. According to Turton’s report, Kirk made a statement while talking at the American Fest, a political congress organized by Turning Point in December 2023. Turton provided Snopes a voice recording, which confirmed that Kirk said the quote about King.
On September 10, 2025, Turning Point USA founder and conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was shot deadly during an event that spoke Utah College.
