Trump’s takeover bid slapped down by Greenlanders | World | News

Greenlanders have vowed to defend their “freedom” in the face of Donald Trump’s threat to take over the world’s largest island. The US president argues that Greenland, an autonomous region controlled by Denmark, is vital to his country’s national security. However, local people in the regional capital, Nuuk, responded by sending the message that their homes could not be usurped.
60-year-old Morten Meller said, patting his chest. Daily Record: “No. He can’t do that. We must have our freedom! Donald Trump He thinks he can buy us, pay for us, but we’re people.” The native then added a defiant four-word oath: “We cannot be bought.” Clam fisherman Peter Hessner said he wanted independence while preserving the Greenlandic way of life.
He said the region could do this without needing U.S. intervention or money. Mr Hessner said: “We want to govern our own country independently of other countries, including Denmark.
“We don’t want a worse arrangement than we have. If independence were offered to me tomorrow, I would accept it, but I would not accept an agreement to be part of America, no matter how much money it would cost. We want our freedom.”
“We have a lot of mines and a lot of fish in the sea. We can open some mines and that way we can make a lot of money for our people. Our fishing industry can also be very successful.”
Malik Jensen, a 17-year-old student, said he wanted to convey a message to Mr. Trump from Nuuk’s youth. He said: “My message is: fuck you. I’m angry about that because we don’t want Americans here.”
“We don’t want our country to be invaded and annexed – whatever that means. People are scared right now…
“People are angry and they don’t accept it. Our country is beautiful and we believe that culture and history are more important than money.”
Mr. Trump recently threatened, in a frightening escalation, to do something to Greenland “whether they like it or not.”
He said: “Right now, we’re going to do something in Greenland whether they want it or not, because if we don’t, Russia or China will take over Greenland and we won’t have Russia or China as neighbors. OK?
“I’d like to make a deal the easy way. But if we don’t do it the easy way, we’ll do it the hard way.”
A report published by Reuters earlier this month claimed that the Trump administration was looking at a possible plan to offer residents a six-figure sum to get them to agree to annexation.
