Law & order must be maintained at any cost in Bangladesh: BNP’s Tarique Rahman | World News

BNP chief Tarique Rahman on Saturday called for maintaining law and order “at all costs” and sought cooperation from all to build a safe and humane Bangladesh.
Rahman’s Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) scored a landslide victory in landmark parliamentary elections on Friday, securing a more than two-thirds majority. The BNP leader will be the prime minister for the first time. He will replace the head of the interim government, Mohammed Younis.
Addressing a press conference a day after the landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary elections, Rahman said, “We need everyone’s cooperation to build a safe and humane Bangladesh. This time, everyone needs to play a responsible role in rebuilding the country.” Speaking to The Dhaka Tribune, Rahman said, “Nobody can be treated unfairly under any excuse. Law and order must be maintained at all costs.” he said.
Rahman stated that the liberal people of the country brought the BNP to victory and described the result as “the victory of the people”. BNP Chairman said, “From today on, everyone is free. We congratulate everyone. With the participation of everyone, the journey of a state free of fascism has begun in the country.” he said.
“Everyone’s opinion is important in the construction of the country. We will build the country according to everyone’s opinion,” he said.
The 13th Parliament elections assumed significance as they were held in the wake of a turbulent political vacuum, instability and fragile security situation, including widespread attacks on minorities, after student-led protests toppled Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule in August 2024.
According to the Election Commission (EC), the BNP won 209 out of 297 seats, while the right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats. Hasina’s Awami League party was barred from participating in the elections, which recorded a voter turnout of 59.44 per cent.
The EC postponed the declaration of results in two seats, Chattogram-2 and Chattogram-4; The election in one seat was postponed due to the death of a candidate.
