A UK city with cheap bills and food has been named among the best places to retire in Britain. Housing in the city is also affordable compared to other places in the UK; smaller homes cost around £130,000 on average.
Rest Less, a publication designed for people over 50, named Hull among the best cities to retire in 2026.
The city was also named one of the top 25 global destinations to visit this year by National Geographic. The famous media outlet cited its renovated port, high-end museums, popular aquarium, maritime history and lively Old Town as the main reasons for the visit.

Rest Less He said: “If you’re attracted to the water and prefer somewhere with character rather than ostentatious perfection, Hull could be a great choice for you. It’s regularly listed among the most affordable places to live in the UK, with smaller homes costing around £130,000 and a price-to-earnings ratio of around 4.4, well below the UK average.”
“Groceries and household bills tend to be cheaper than average; low prices in supermarkets help reduce weekly shopping. Eating out is refreshingly affordable; local bars and cafes around the marina and Old Town often offer meals for under £15. Entertainment is also low-cost, with free museums, galleries and waterside walks.”
Hull is considered one of the most affordable cities in England. A study found that the city is the fourth cheapest in the UK for a grocery store and eating out is also considered relatively cheap.

The city benefits from lower council tax rates compared to southern areas, ranging from £1,385.81 for Group A to £2,078.73 for Group D. Meanwhile, Hull also has one of the cheapest utility rates in the Yorkshire and Humber region.
Houses in Hull sold for an average of £167,877 last year, according to RightMove. Terraced houses sold for £133,208, semi-detached properties sold for £187,427 and detached houses sold for an average of £295,091.
As well as being affordable, Hull benefits from having a world-class aquarium, The Deep, and a free-entry museum district. It is also full of cobblestone streets and historical buildings.

The Hull Maritime Project, which cost approximately £40 million, was completed during World War II. It will refurbish the grade-listed Hull Maritime Museum and the historic Dock Office Rooms. The Spurn Lightship, a unique light ship, is also being restored.
Rest Less continued: “However, if you’re interested in living by the water, there’s plenty to do in Hull. The historic Old Town, with its narrow, cobbled streets, is a joy to wander around, while the marina area and Humber estuary offer beautiful views and easy walking paths.
“Hull was also named UK City of Culture in 2017 and is home to a multitude of galleries, museums and events, whilst the countryside and coastline of East Yorkshire are easily accessible. There are also direct rail links to Leeds, York and even London – rare for a city of this size – and there is a strong sense of local identity.”
