Two dead after car crash in Camden South following police chase from Beverly Hills
Two people were killed after a man chased police in Sydney’s south-west in a stolen vehicle for an hour before crashing into the car.
Police said the pursuit began shortly after a 31-year-old man allegedly attacked a 25-year-old man at a service station on King Georges Road in South Hurstville at about 10.20am on Saturday morning and then stole his red sedan.
Highway patrol officers in Beverly Hills spotted the allegedly stolen car a short time later and attempted to pull the driver over. When the car did not stop, officers called in more backup, including a police helicopter, to chase the car.
The vehicle pursuit was terminated when the vehicle went onto the M5 motorway near Bankstown. The helicopter continued to follow the sedan.
After evading police for 50 minutes, the sedan allegedly crashed into an Alfa Romeo on the Old Hume Highway in South Camden at 11.10am.
The two people in the Alfa Romeo were attended to by NSW Police and Ambulance paramedics but both died at the scene. They have yet to be formally defined.
The driver of the allegedly stolen sedan fled the scene of the accident but was arrested nearby.
He was taken to Campbelltown Hospital for mandatory testing and will be taken to Campbelltown Police Station for further questioning.
Police said they established multiple crime scenes. A critical incident team from Burwood Police Area Command will lead the investigation into the incidents, supported by St George Police Area Command and the Accident Investigation Unit.
The investigation will be reviewed by the Professional Standards Command and overseen by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
