The gunman opened fire in a classroom in the engineering building, firing more than 40 rounds from a 9 mm handgun, a law enforcement official told the AP. When the person was taken into custody, two handguns were seized and authorities also found two 30-round magazines, the official said.

“For those who know at least a little bit about the Hanukkah story, it’s pretty clear that there’s nothing better we could do if we could come together as a community tonight to shed some light,” Mayor Brett Smiley said at a news conference earlier in the day.

Smiley said he visited some injured students and was inspired by their courage, hope and gratitude. One of them told him that active shooter drills at the high school were helpful.

“The resilience that survivors have shown and shared with me is frankly quite impressive,” she said.

Investigators were not immediately sure how the attacker got into the first-floor classroom of the seven-story Barus & Holley building, which houses the engineering and physics faculty. According to the university’s website, the building has more than 100 laboratories and dozens of classrooms and offices.

The building’s exterior doors are unlocked, but rooms used for final exams require ID card access, Smiley said.

Chemical engineering student Emma Ferraro was working on a final project in the lobby when she heard loud explosions. When he realized there was a gunshot, he rushed towards the door and entered a nearby building and waited for hours.

Security camera footage released by the police shows a suspect dressed in black walking away from the scene.
