Two get 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for smuggling ganja

The Metropolitan Sessions Court, Vijayawada, sentenced two persons to 10 years rigorous imprisonment after finding them guilty of marijuana smuggling. According to sources, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), following a tip-off, stopped a cargo vehicle in Vijayawada in 2018 and seized 1,394 kg of ganja worth around Rs 2.9 crore and arrested two persons. These were registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985. The contraband was being smuggled from Sabbavaram in Visakhapatnam district to Zaheerabad in Telangana. The court also imposed a fine of ₹ 1 lakh each. In a statement on Wednesday, December 10, DRI said that if the fine is not paid, the convicts will be sentenced to simple imprisonment for another three months.
