Playwright Sir Tom Stoppard, who won an Oscar and a Golden Globe with his screenplay for Shakespeare In Love, died at the age of 88.

United Agents said he died peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

The following statements were made by his agency: ‘We are deeply saddened to announce that our beloved client and friend Tom Stoppard died peacefully at his home in Dorset, surrounded by his family.

‘He will be remembered for his work, his genius, his humanity, his intelligence, his irreverence, his generosity of spirit and his deep love of the English language.
