Two teens suffer slash wounds in machete attack near Luna Park

Two teenagers suffered slash wounds when they were attacked with machetes near St Kilda’s Luna Park on Sunday night, as the Victorian government faces pressure over crime in the state.

Police believe a group of men armed with machetes approached the young boys on Cavell Street in St Kilda at around 6.35pm and allegedly attacked them before fleeing in a gray Land Rover.

Two children with minor injuries were treated at the scene.

Their car was involved in a minor collision with another car at the intersection of Esplanade and Cavell Street before fleeing towards the Melbourne CBD.

The police, who could not find the car, continue to search for the group and their vehicles.

Despite the state government tightening bail laws and introducing machete boxes for people to surrender their weapons, the use of machetes in violent crimes remains a major concern for the government and police.

St Kilda residents spotted a number of police cars responding to the attack in the busy dining and entertainment district, and it came just hours after police commander Wayne Cheesman expressed frustration over the police’s “crime crisis”; Police and officers are needed to fulfill their normal tempo of monitoring the protests.

No arrests have been made so far and police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with dashcam or CCTV footage to contact www.crimestoppers.com.au or call 1800 333 000.
