ICE Ordered to Fix 'Horrifying' Conditions at NYC Facility After Migrant Complaints

On Tuesday, a federal judge ordered Federal immigration officials to immediately improve the conditions in the New York City immigration facility following the complaints of the lack of dirty, extremely crowded rooms and basic hygiene products.
US Regional Judge Lewis A. Kaplan issued a temporary limitation order that requires US migration and customs storage (ICE) to reduce capacity, improve cleaning and provide sleep mats within 26 Federal Plaza, a government building in Lower Manhattan.
According to Associated Press, the order comes after a lawsuit filed against the detained immigrants.
The immigrants said that they were fed “slop” and were exposed to sweat, urine and stool smell due to rooms with open toilets.
A woman said she could not access menstrual products during her period, because the court said that only two were offered to an entire women’s room.

Doj lawyer Jeffrey Oesttercher He acknowledged that the detainees had only two meals a day and that they were not given medicine or sleep mats. However, according to The Hill’s reports, he returned to extreme crowds.
“The current conditions are important,” he said to the judge at the trial. “To the extent that they are talking about the extreme crowd, it is not seen that there is an extreme crowd at the moment.”
“I think we all agree that the conditions in 26 federal plaza should be humanitarian, and we clearly share this belief.” “I think there are some real disputes.”
At the order of Tuesday, Kaplan ordered immigrant officials to provide 50 square meters per person. This means that the capacity of the largest waiting room will be brought to approximately 15 people after saying that the prisoners are at least 40.
The cells should also be cleaned thoroughly three times a day. Authorities also need to provide clean bed mats and sufficient soap, toothbrush, toothpaste and other hygiene products.
The judge also ordered the authorities to make secret phone calls with lawyers, including interpreters for those who do not speak English.

However, Judge Kaplan was not convinced that the situation would not worsen again.
The judge said at the hearing on Tuesday, “My result here is a very serious threat to the continuation of irreparable injuries, considering the conditions I have been told.” He said. “In fact, there is no applicable way to ensure that any progress will not be shifted very quickly.”
The case was introduced by the Migrant Rights Organization New York, as well as by the American Union of Civil Freedoms and the Union of New York Civil Freedoms.
“Today’s order sends a clear message: Ice cannot keep people in abusive conditions and cannot reject their constitutional rights for the necessary process and legal representation.” He said.
“26 We will continue to fight to support the rights of people and beyond the federal plaza and beyond.”
