Uber, taxis put on notice over women’s safety in NSW

As the NSW government introduces new guidelines aimed at improving the safety of hundreds of thousands of women, ride-sharing giants including Uber and DiDi have taken notice.

A NSW government survey has found that although most rideshare journeys are safe, women still face a greater risk of unwanted behavior such as intrusive personal questions, inappropriate comments, staring and invasion of their personal space.

The new guidelines, to be introduced by the state’s Point-to-Point Commissioner, aim to ensure companies have strong systems in place to protect women, including by training drivers on what constitutes offensive or unprofessional behavior towards women.

Covering taxi companies, the guidelines will also aim to ensure providers handle incidents and complaints effectively, as well as making passengers aware of available in-app and in-car safety features.

Transport Secretary John Graham said providers had a clear responsibility.

“Whether you’re cruising around the city during the day or enjoying our vibrant city at night, this initiative will help ensure every traveler feels safe and respected during every carpool, taxi and rental car ride,” he said.

Women’s Minister Jodie Harrison said reports of harassment or inappropriate behavior were “unacceptable”. “It is time for the industry to prioritize women’s safety and be aware of its obligations,” she said.

“These guidelines will help service providers ensure that appropriate security systems are in place and that they are appropriately equipped with reports of offensive or unacceptable behaviour.”

The Point to Point Commissioner will undertake targeted practices as part of the compliance program.

Commissioner Anthony Wing said he will continue to work with service providers to ensure resources are used and security management systems are updated in accordance with guidelines.

Uber Australia Safety Manager Nicole Ashcroft said women’s safety was the “number one priority”.

“We welcome the Point-to-Point Transport Commissioner’s efforts to strengthen safety standards across the industry,” he said.

“We believe consistent rules across the industry play an important role in helping women feel safer when travelling.

“Ongoing collaboration between government, industry and women’s safety experts will be critical to ensuring these efforts are effective.”

DiDi and the NSW Taxi Council also confirmed these remarks.

Taxi Council chief executive Nick Abrahim said the industry “holds drivers to high standards and expectations for safe and respectful service, particularly when it comes to the safety of women”.

“Therefore, the NSW Taxi Council supports and adopts the Women’s Safety Industry Guidelines issued by the NSW Point-to-Point Transport Commissioner.”
