Two dead after car ploughs into crowd in German city

According to local broadcaster MDR, citing the police, two people died and many were injured when a vehicle crashed into a crowd in the center of the eastern German city of Leipzig.
Leipzig police confirmed to Reuters the injuries were caused by a driving vehicle but could not provide further details.
A damaged Volkswagen SUV was seen speeding through a pedestrian zone with one person on board, local broadcaster Radio Leipzig reported.
The broadcaster quoted eyewitnesses as saying that there were stabbings as well as many bodies covered with sheets.

In the statement published on the website of the city of Leipzig, it was stated that the car and its driver were stopped and no longer pose any danger.
The incident took place on Grimmaische Strasse, a street leading to the shopping area in the center of Leipzig.
Leipzig is located southwest of Berlin and is one of the largest cities in East Germany, with a population of more than 630,000.
