Mum of AFL stars reveals house raided in Dezi Freeman probe
The mother of AFL stars Ben and Sam Reid has revealed police investigating Dezi Freeman’s movements searched her home for three hours.
Speaking on a podcast she hosts, Kay Reid confirmed the cop killer’s property was raided to find clues about his movements in the months he was on the run from authorities after the deaths of his two victims.
But he insisted the officers who carried out the raid, seizing his mobile phones, copying his hard drive and searching the property were “wasting their time”.
He said officers arrived at his Victorian home at 7am on Tuesday and spent most of the morning there.
“They arrived at seven o’clock this morning. Bruce (her husband) was still in his underwear, I was just getting dressed, my brother-in-law was here, making a cup of tea, he didn’t see them coming,” she said.
“We had a bunch of old phones. They took them all. They took my phone and it’s going to take seven hours to take it down.”
Ms Reid claimed officers did not specifically say what triggered the search, but she suspected it was linked to the high-profile case.
“Well, it’s probably about the Dezi thing, I don’t know, because we knew him, I really don’t know, they couldn’t tell us,” he said.
“We don’t know why they’re there. I’ll have to follow that judge.”
Nine police officers were reportedly at the home for three hours, but no arrests were made.
Ms Reid, who owns a travel agency in Bright and has posted anti-vaccine material online, added that she had told officers to investigate mRNA vaccines and the Constitution.
“They can look at things they like on my phone, maybe learn something,” he added.
“We have nothing to hide, this wasted our whole day. I needed to go to yoga.”
Police also searched six more properties in Victoria and NSW during pre-dawn raids on Tuesday.
A 64-year-old Lucyvale man was arrested and released without charges.
It comes after police made two further arrests in connection with the operation, which aimed to establish how Freeman was able to evade authorities so long before his death.
The 56-year-old man was shot dead by police on March 30 this year following a tense standoff at a camp near Walwa in Victoria’s north-east.
It has been almost seven months since he shot and killed two police officers, Cadim De Waart-Hotart and Neal Thompson, in Porepunkah.
With Freeman dead, investigators are turning their attention to piecing together his movements during his time on the run.
Detective Inspector Anthony Gasparini, who is leading the investigation, said police were working “tirelessly” to piece together the dramatic events that led to Freeman’s death.
“The investigation doesn’t end just because Freeman is located,” he said in a statement Tuesday.
“We said from the beginning that if Freeman were alive, he would likely need significant support to leave the area and survive the next month.”
