Seating dispute sparks brawl on local train in Thane, three commuters injured

Three passengers were injured in a fight over a seating dispute on a local train in Thane district of Maharashtra shortly after midnight on Thursday (July 16, 2026), police said.

Archana Dusane, senior inspector of Kalyan Government Railway Police (GRP), said that the incident took place in the luggage compartment of the Ambernath-bound suburban train. PTI.

Preliminary investigation by GRP, Central Railway, revealed that the head injuries sustained by two passengers during the fight were not caused by a sharp weapon but by a metal ‘kada’ (ring) worn by one of them.

In a statement made by the Central Railway, it was stated that the fight took place around 12.30 am while the Parel-Ambernath train was in motion.

According to railway officials, a fight broke out between three passengers, two of whom were seriously injured.

Upon being informed, GRP and Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel rushed to intervene in the train which reached Kalyan railway station.

Ms. Dusane said an investigation showed that a heated argument broke out among passengers over seat sharing when the train was moving between Dombivli and Thakurli stations.

Three people, Raju Waghe (19), Sahil Khandare (19) and Pritesh Kanojia (31), were injured when the argument turned into a physical conflict.

In the preliminary examination carried out by GRP, it was determined that none of the injured were carrying sharp weapons. In the statement made by Central Railways, “The injury occurred as a result of the metal bracelet attached to one person’s wrist hitting the other person’s head during the brawl.” The statement was included.

After first aid, the injured were taken to Rukminibai Hospital in Kalyan on stretchers and received treatment.

One of them, who suffered a more serious head injury, was later referred to Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital (Sion Hospital) in Mumbai.

In another incident, a man was detained after a video surfaced on social media of him running on a platform at Kurla railway station while carrying a wooden stick on Wednesday night (July 15, 2026), the Central Railway said.

The man’s action caused panic among passengers, after which security personnel quickly caught him.

During preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the man, identified as Sajid Abdul Karim Chaudhary (49), was mentally unstable. Central Railway said he is currently in the custody of GRP, which is conducting further investigations and taking necessary legal action.
