UK drivers urged to fill up before Sunday amid RAC warning | UK | News

Following further rises in fuel prices, RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: “Given how many people rely on their cars, households are really feeling the effects of the conflict in the Middle East.
“The average price of unleaded fuel has risen by more than 14p per liter since the end of February to 147.19p, adding another £8 to the cost of refueling a family car, now £81. The last time petrol was this high was at the beginning of June 2024.”
A bad forecast has been made for the beginning of next week for those who drive diesel vehicles; This means it might be best to refuel before Monday.
Mr Williams continued: “The situation is much worse for drivers of diesel vehicles, with a liter rising by 29p to 171.17p, its highest price for over three years (mid-January 2023). This means a tank now costs £94, £16 more than it did at the start of the conflict.”
“Oil has been trading above $100 a barrel for the past three days and looks set to stay there, drivers face a tough time at the pumps as the Easter holidays approach and there is no end in sight to price increases.
“With the price of petrol likely to rise above 150 pence per liter next week and the price of diesel likely to rise to 180 pence, this looks set to be the most expensive Easter on the road in 2022 since the early days of the war in Ukraine.”
Allan Leighton, chairman of the board of directors of Asda, the UK’s largest supermarket chain, said that there has been intense demand from drivers in recent weeks and also attacked Rachel Reeves.
He said: “Our fuel volumes have increased quite significantly and demand is clearly outstripping supply. Supply is tight and we are all working hard on this. “The issue is temporary and some may see issues while we wait for delivery and we can expect this to continue.
“The current spikes make this difficult for us because spikes can lead to temporary shortages. These are temporary and are addressed very quickly.”
