When I was only 12 years old, Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier lured her friends into the woods and attacked her; They believed that this act of violence would gain the approval of the internet-born bogeyman, the Slender Man.

Together, Weier and Geyser became obsessed with Slender Man and plotted to kill their classmate Payton Leutner in an effort to become a “surrogate” for the character they believed to be real.
After luring Leutner into the woods on May 31, 2014, Weier and Geyser stabbed Leutner 19 times before leaving him for dead — but Leutner survived. The case inspired HBO documentary and 2018 feature film slender man starring Joey King.

Geyser, Weier and Leutner were students at Horning Middle School in the Milwaukee suburb of Waukesha, Wis.
Leutner and Geyser actually became friends at first. In an episode in October 2019 20/20Leutner recalled befriending Geyser after seeing him eating alone for lunch. He also described his former friend as funny and “a bit of a loner.”
But their relationship changed after Geyser befriended Weier in sixth grade in 2014, Leutner said. Weier and Geyser became obsessed with the Thin Man, causing Leutner to want to move away from Geyser.

Over several months, Geyser and Weier hatched a plan to kill Leutner in order to attempt to become “stand-ins” for the fictional horror character. New York Times reported. In February 2014, Weier and Geyser chose May 31 of that year for the attempted murder, using code words such as “cracker” for the knife and “camping trip” for the forest where they believed the Slender Man lived.
According to police, Weier and Geyser took Leutner to a park in Wisconsin and took turns encouraging each other to stab him; As Weier watched, Geyser stabbed him 19 times.
They then left Leutner to die, but he survived. Leutner crawled to a nearby bike path, where a passerby called 911 and stayed with him until paramedics arrived.
Local police found Weier and Geyser, who was 12 at the time, walking along the roadside miles from the scene and picked up the girls. They reportedly acted nonchalantly when they informed investigators that they had killed their friends to appease Slender Man, who they thought would kill them or their families if they did not kill Leutner.

Geyser and Weier were each charged with first-degree premeditated murder. Despite their age, they were tried as adults.
In August 2017, Weier pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree murder as an accessory to the crime with the use of a deadly weapon. The following month, the jury ruled that Weier was mentally ill at the time of the murder attempt and found him not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect.
Under the plea agreement, Weier was sentenced to a maximum of 25 years in a psychiatric facility. He was ordered to spend at least three years in a psychiatric hospital before he could apply for probation, which would be part of the commitment order. He was also credited with three years of service in a juvenile detention facility.

Gayser’s lawyers argued in court documents that he suffered from schizophrenia and psychotic spectrum disorder, which made him prone to delusions and paranoid beliefs. He pleaded guilty in October 2017 and was committed to a mental hospital.

He returned to Horning Middle School for seventh grade in September 2014. A representative for the Leutner family said Leutner did well academically, participated in school music programs and volunteered at an animal shelter, as he did before Weier and Geyser’s attack. He and his family sought counseling to cope with the trauma of the stabbing.
In October 2019, Leutner spoke publicly for the first time about the Slender Man stabbing, telling Muir in a speech: 20/20 An interview in which he said that five years after the attack he still sleeps with broken scissors under his pillow.
