UK weather: Met Office issues yellow wind warning as snow and cold return

The deepening low pressure area between Scotland and Iceland on Wednesday brings strong winds, storms and even severe storms from the west.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for winds to reach 105-110 km/h (65-70 mph) in western and northern Scotland, with a small chance of reaching 80 mph (130 km/h) in some places.

The strongest winds will first be felt in the Outer and Inner Hebrides, then spread to northern mainland Scotland and Orkney.

Some travel disruptions may occur, such as ferry cancellations, flight delays, and bridge restrictions for high-sided vehicles.

Wednesday will be a dry, bright day for much of the UK, while there will be some frequent showers across Scotland.

The strongest winds in western Scotland will ease on Thursday, but winds will return to a fairly wide area across the UK.

Speeds will be widely seen at 40-50mph (65-80km/h), with speeds of 60mph (97km/h) off the west coast of England and Wales and 65mph (105km/h) in northern and western Scotland.

Then we need to pay attention to the weekend forecasts.

Another area of deep low pressure will move across the UK to the south of Iceland with strong winds on its southern flank.
