Ukraine denies drone attack on Putin’s residence

President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected Russian allegations that Ukraine carried out a drone attack on one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences and accused Moscow of trying to derail peace talks.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that Kiev launched an attack on Putin’s state residence in the Novgorod region of northwestern Russia throughout the night using 91 long-range unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

Russia said it would now review its position in peace negotiations. It is not yet clear where Putin was at the time of the alleged attack.

Zelensky dismissed the claim as “typical Russian lies” aimed at providing the Kremlin with an excuse to continue attacks on Ukraine.

He said that Russia had targeted government buildings in Kiev before.

Zelensky added X: “It is very important that the world no longer remains silent. We cannot allow Russia to undermine work towards lasting peace.”

In a statement shared on Telegram on Monday, Lavrov said that all 91 UAVs were destroyed. He claimed that the missiles launched from Putin’s residence were intercepted and destroyed by Russian air defense systems.

He added that no casualties or damage were reported as a result of the attack.

“Given the eventual corruption of the criminal Kiev regime, which has switched to a policy of state terrorism, Russia’s negotiating stance will be revised,” he said.

However, he added that Russia does not intend to exit the negotiation process with the United States, according to the Russian news agency Tass.

Moscow’s claim follows talks between the United States and Ukraine in Florida on Sunday, where President Trump and Zelensky discussed a revised peace plan to end the war.

While Zelensky said that the USA gave Ukraine a security guarantee for 15 years, Trump said that the agreement was “close to 95 percent” at this point.

The Ukrainian leader described territorial issues and the Russian-occupied Zaporozhye nuclear power plant as the last unresolved issues, and there were few signs of progress on the future of Ukraine’s disputed Donbas region, which Russia wants to take over completely.

Moscow currently controls about 75% of the Donetsk region and about 99% of neighboring Luhansk. The two regions are collectively known as Donbas.

Russia had previously rejected important parts of the discussed plan.

President Trump “reached a positive conversation” with Putin following U.S.-Ukraine talks, the White House said Monday.

Yuri Ushakov, a Kremlin foreign policy aide, told reporters on Monday that during the call, Putin pointed out that the alleged attack on his residence took place “immediately after the meeting, which the United States considered a successful round of negotiations.”

Ushahov said, “The US president was shocked by this information, angry and said that he could not believe such crazy actions. It was stated that this would undoubtedly affect the US approach to working with Zelensky.”

The White House did not address the claim while confirming that the call took place.

Ushakov added that Putin stated that the “reckless terrorist act” would be met with “the strongest reaction.”
