President Donald Trump pressed Senate Majority Leader John Thune on Thursday to eliminate the Senate’s “blue slide” tradition, arguing that the practice allows Democrats to block Republican judges and U.S. attorney nominees.
Trump wrote on Truth Social: “If they say no, then it’s over for this very qualified Republican nominee. Only a truly far-left Democrat can be confirmed. It’s shocking that Republicans under Senator Chuck G are allowing this fraud to continue. It’s unfair to Republicans, it’s not Constitutional.”
“I take this opportunity to ask Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a great man, to do something, ideally end the Blue Slips. Too many GREAT REPUBLICANS are being packaged, PACKED. None of them are being confirmed!!!”
Trump’s remarks come as courts continue to examine the legality of attorney appointments in the United States.

Trump appointed Lindsey Halligan as interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia following the resignation of Erik Siebert. A federal judge in November dismissed the indictments of former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James, finding that Halligan was unlawfully appointed and therefore lacked authority to bring the charges.

Trump is effectively calling on the Senate to end the long-standing tradition for all judicial nominees. Senators from both parties are reluctant to change the practice because they fear they would lose the ability to stall or obstruct nominees they are concerned about.
