Trump tells Davos leaders US should acquire Greenland for national security

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

President Donald J. Trump wants Greenland. Full title, ownership papers and no, not interested in renting at this time. “Only the United States can protect this giant piece of land, this giant piece of ice,” Trump said in his speech at the spectacular World Economic Forum held in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday, January 21.

“I want urgent negotiations to be held once again to discuss the purchase of Greenland by the United States,” he told the leaders gathered in Davos. “Just a little question,” he joked.

Don’t be surprised by Trump’s tactics. There is some clever thinking behind Trump’s Greenland proposal. The post-1945 world order avoided border changes. Trump sees it differently. “This enormous, unsecured island is actually part of North America,” Trump said. The United States has not made a major land deal since the Spanish-American War of 1898, and the last acquisition was in the Marshall Islands in 1947.

“I will not use force,” Trump assured viewers. Of course not. Trump will not bow to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s illegal extortion tactics. He won’t steal Greenland. The last thing he wants is paratroopers in Arctic gear jumping into Greenland.

TRUMP says he won’t use military force to seize Greenland

There is no doubt that the purchase of Greenland for the United States will be the No. 1 real estate deal of Trump’s career. But Trump’s primary goal, wisely, is national security. Greenlandic soil is a real and urgent concern. “These missiles should be flying right through the middle of the ice floe,” he said, adding that U.S. ownership is vital to “keeping out our very energetic and dangerous potential enemies.”

Strategically, Trump is right. Russia’s amazing new And you-class nuclear submarines based on the Kola peninsula can launch Kalibr and Oniks missiles and the new hypersonic Zircon missile. Russian bombers and anti-submarine aircraft are active; Just ask the Norwegians, who again intercepted Russian planes on January 6. Chinese ships and submarines are also circling around.

You can imagine the terrifying briefing charts that Deputy Defense Secretary Stephen Feinberg and others showed Trump as they prepared the architecture for the Golden Dome.

The buyer is, as realtors say, “highly motivated.”

TRUMP CHALLENGES CARNEY IN DAVOS, CLAIMS CANADA SHOULD BE ‘GRATEFUL’ FOR GOLDEN DOME MISSILE DEFENSE

Here comes the art of the deal. At Davos, Trump unleashed all sorts of real estate tactics, from threats to pleas to mocking the value of that “big, beautiful piece of ice.”

As you would expect as we prepare for negotiations, Trump has continued to devalue Greenland’s critical mineral resources. He called Greenland “a cold and poorly situated piece of ice.” Trump also criticized the current owner, Denmark, for failing to invest and preserve the site. According to Trump, Denmark promised an additional $200 million for the defense of Greenland in 2019 but did not deliver.

These are all classic real estate tactics.

NATO CHIEF PRAISED TRUMP IN DAVOS, SAID HE FORCED EUROPE TO ‘SPEED UP’ ON DEFENSE

Then an emotional appeal emerged. Trump said “we haven’t gotten anything” from NATO after decades of security presence in Europe. “All we want is to take Greenland, the rights, the title, the ownership,” Trump whined. Shifting gears, he pointed out that a US takeover would be a good deal for NATO. Trump claimed that US possession of Greenland would “greatly enhance the security of the entire alliance.”

Of course he loves history. Trump talked about how the US liberated Greenland from Nazi Germany (which is true). Later, the U.S. Army Air Forces operated ferry services to England for B-17 bombers, P-38 Lightning fighters, C-47 cargo transports, and many other fighter aircraft via airfields in Greenland. Trump is upset that Democratic President Harry S. Truman gave it back after World War II.

However, this is not an imperialist or mercantilist scramble. Trump doesn’t want to make money from Greenland; On the contrary, he wants to spend it. In the Golden Dome. And all P-8 anti-submarine warfare aircraft and other assets to defend Greenland.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, who is in the audience, has an important task ahead of him. Trump likes Rutte and called him “wonderful” in Davos. Dutch prime minister Rutte now needs to find a way to give Trump a stake in Greenland. An agreement, a joint venture, a defense contract, or a flag-raising real estate deal may be required, but there is no turning back. At Davos, Trump made clear that his continued interest in Ukraine and NATO was contingent on securing legal access to Greenland to enhance U.S. defenses.

Let the negotiations begin.
