A 14-year-old girl was gang-raped in Kolkata’s Dum Dum area on Saturday evening, police said, adding that the girl had gone out for private lessons when the incident took place. 3 people were arrested and sent to prison regarding the incident. Police identified these people as Sanju Saha, Vicky Paswan and Rajesh Paswan. Reports indicate that the survivor knew one of the three defendants.
According to the police, the accused forcibly took the girl in an e-rickshaw to a house in Motilal Colony, where she was tortured and gang-raped. He somehow managed to escape and returned home at night in an unstable state. She later narrated her experience to her parents, who filed a complaint at the Dum Dum Police Station. The police have charged the three accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS). One of the defendants was detained in the police for 5 days, and the others were sent to judicial custody for one day each.
Local workers of the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) staged a protest in front of Dum Dum Police Station on Sunday morning, demanding strict action against criminals. The case has surfaced even as the Trinamool Congress government led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is under fire for rape cases in the state. Last year, the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a public hospital sparked protests across the country. Since then, numerous other cases of sexual assault on women have been reported from across the state.
