Uniparty Grab. Independents take electoral reform to the High Court

In an unusual move, two former independent MPs are taking on the Government’s new electoral reform laws in court, challenging their legality. What is fraud?

The new laws, allegedly designed to deter big-spending donors like Clive Palmer, cap a candidate’s spending among voters at $800,000 and limit the number of candidates any one donor can support in a state or territory to five. It also limits the amount a donor can spend on a major party to $450,000, but does not limit or regulate how much a party can transfer to each voter beyond its candidate cap.

The corresponding cap for donations to single-candidate parties or individual candidates is set at $50,000. Together, these measures would give established political parties a significant advantage by spending more than independent candidates.

Goldstein’s former independent MP (Vic), Zoe Daniel and former Senator (and MWM Contributor), Rex Patrick, claims that these changes violate the implied freedom of political communication and are unconstitutional.

Zoe Daniel told Guard, “Labour and Liberal have conspired to ensure that politics remains a comfortable table for two, and they are the only guests at that table, even as voters make that increasingly clear.
