Unique altars at Arte Américas for Día de Muertos

Arte Américas in Downtown Fresno hosts elaborate and unique altars known as ofrendas in honor of the Day of the Dead, a special weekend for millions of people around the world each year.
“This time of year brings up all kinds of emotions for people. We take time to remember the people who are not with us,” says Executive Director Arianna Paz Chávez.
This year’s theme is “Figuras Monumentales”, which means monumental figures.
When you walk through the front door, your eyes will immediately notice the creativity and diversity among the 11 altars.
Chavez said they were intentional about announcing this news to everyone during the application season.
“I think about the power of the invitation.” said Chavez. “The result of this effort is an exhibition that really highlights the solidarity between different social movements and social efforts.”
While most of the altars in this creative space are by Latin artists, featuring Spanish icons like Paquita La Del Barrio, Chavez says some local collectives are responding to their calls.
“We are thrilled that Maarte responded; they are a local Filipino-led organization,” he said.
On the other side of the room is an altar commemorating Ralph Gnat.
“He is a person who works at Fresno City College and inspires students,” Chavez said. “Prior to his career, he was a member of the Black Panther party.”
Also on display is an altar commemorating the late Joseph Castro, who served as former Fresno State president and president of California State University.
He passed away in August after a battle with cancer.
“We are grateful to his family for their involvement and support,” Chavez said.
Outside, you’ll see 6-meter-tall animal sculptures inspired by original pieces known as Alebrijes and Nahuales, which you can also learn about inside.
The altars will be on display until November 23.
