Ecuador: Confronting gang members at the heart of a drug battle

BBC correspondent Orla Guerin goes on patrol with Ecuadorian police as they battle a huge increase in drug crime.

Drugs are flowing into Ecuador from neighboring Colombia and Peru, the world’s two largest producers. Powerful indigenous gangs with links to Mexican cartels and Albanian mafia groups help smuggle the cocaine.

The murder rate in Ecuador last year was one of the highest in the world, with more than 9,200 people killed, according to the country’s interior ministry.
