Man facing charges for allegedly running meth lab at MSU academic building

A suspect was arrested for allegedly operating a secret methamphetamine laboratory in Wells Hall, Michigan State University’s largest academic building.
Xin Tong, 31, faces felony charges in connection with the alleged operation as well as misdemeanor trespassing, according to police.
Officers responded to Wells Hall earlier this week on reports of a suspicious person, a strong odor and unknown items on the floor, WILX reported. Officers located Tong and confirmed his identity using an expired MSU student ID.

Tong was in possession of multiple bags, which officers later searched after obtaining a search warrant and discovered several bottles containing substances commonly used in the production of meth, according to the outlet.
“The chemicals include sodium hydroxide pellets, hydrochloric acid, methanol, isopropyl alcohol, acetone, and butane. Multiple tests conducted by the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) confirm that the environment in Wells Hall does not pose a risk to our community,” MSU police said. he said.
Authorities later announced that a methamphetamine laboratory was never located in Wells Hall.

“The suspect was found to be in possession of chemicals and/or equipment on his personal property that could be used in the production of methamphetamine,” police said.
Tong allegedly caused serious damage to doors, flooring and fixtures at Wells Hall between April 10 and April 26.
He was charged with trespassing of a building over $20,000, malicious destruction and felony controlled substance operation/maintenance laboratory involving methamphetamine.

Wells Hall was evacuated Monday and remained closed “out of an abundance of caution” through Friday, the university said in a press release, adding that “there is no known threat to the campus community.”
Tong is being held in the Ingham County Jail on $500,000 bail. The Department of Homeland Security also reportedly seized his bond.
